EMSG hosted a pre-concert discussion on writings by Alvin Lucier, James Tenney, and Hildegard Westerkamp at the UNC Department of Music’s annual Festival on the Hill symposium. The concert followed with compositions by J.S. Bach, Clarence Barlow, John Cage, Lucier, Chris Mercer, Heinrich Schütz, Tenney, and Westerkamp.

EMSG returned to the Ackland for a Music in the Galleries concert centered around the exhibition “Walls of Color: The Murals of Hans Hofmann.” The concert featured the music of New York School composers Morton Feldman and Earle Brown, performed by members of the Duke New Music Ensemble and EMSG. With additional performances of new music by Valerie Kuehne & the Wasps Nests and Kenneth D. Stewart.

In conjunction with the Ackland’s “Testing Testing” exhibition, the EMSG presented a lecture-participation-performance event exploring the overlaps of Paik’s visual art, music, and performance. Featuring a set by Cyanotype (free improv, Durham).

13-14 April 2015 – Residency 2: Michael Pisaro and Greg Stuart

The Experimental Music Study Group presented a captivating two-night residency featuring California-based composer Michael Pisaro and South Carolina-based percussionist Greg Stuart. A member of the Wandelweiser collective, Michael Pisaro crafts intricate soundscapes that hover at the boundaries between sound and silence, drawing attention to the act of listening. Greg Stuart’s inventive percussion music explores alternative techniques including sustained friction, gravity-based sounds, and sympathetic vibration. For nearly a decade, Pisaro and Stuart have collaborated on heralded projects and released recordings on the Gravity Wave label, forging a close bond between composer and performer.

The EMSG’s first spring artist residency featured acclaimed performers R. Andrew Lee (piano) and violinist Erik Carlson (violin) performing the music of Wandelweiser. An international composer-collective based in Germany, Wandelweiser explores the edges of sound and silence. Featured music by Antoine Beuger, Jürg Frey, Eva-Maria Houben, Michael Pisaro, Craig Shepard, and Manfred Werder. A Raleigh house concert also featured Tanya Kalmanovitch and Mat Manieri (viola duo).
